If you simply toss them straight into the washing machine with your usual load, you could be locking in residues, reducing absorbency, and starting the clock on their rapid decline.

For a natural softening and residue-busting alternative, add about 1/2 a cup (approx. 120ml) of distilled white vinegar into the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine.
